I had so much fun last week adding art to my front porch that I decided to bring lanterns back to my back porch.  Ten years ago, when we first moved into our house, we bought adorable little glass lanterns, which spent the next 60 days shattering on the concrete every time the wind blew.  Ahhh.  There was money well spent.

This week, I went out in search of lanterns that could take some abuse, and I found three on clearance at the hardware store.

Original Lanterns

When I went hunting for plastic (read: unbreakable) heads in my art room, I realized that the only thing to do was to make a set of Alice in Wonderland lanterns.

Original Heads

The rabbit head actually came from a little plastic bank. The doll head bought me on eBay.  And the old man was a political puppet.  Or just a regular puppet.  Whatever.  Don’t question his motives.

I am completely out of spray gesso – and for that matter, any local places to buy it – so I set to work with gesso and a brush.

Heads with Gesso

The secret with plastic is three coats of gesso.  Oh, spray can, how I miss you . . .

A thoroughly Mad Hatter, finished!

All 3 Lit

In the cool of evening.  So pretty!

You should do something artistic for house this weekend!  Don’t you think?

Thank you! It's been really fun to look out the window and see them hanging there!

they are great! I really need to add more art to my home, now it´s the art on the walls and not much more. seeing your home filled with art makes my home look very plain and boring…

Thanks, malin! I agree: More art in your home. And then you should send me pictures of it. And then, I will feature you again! 😀

Hahahaha. Please come and pretend-smoke on all of my porches. I pretend-have seven of them, not counting my imaginary balcony.

Thanks so much, Sal! Think of all the art you could put in your garden if you ever had five minutes to yourself! 😉
